The Blue Trail between Monterosso and Riomaggiore is on every poster and every itinerary, which means by 10am it is a slow shuffle of sun hats and selfie sticks. Board earlier. The section from Vernazza to Corniglia opens into the real coast: dry stone walls holding terraced vineyards above a drop-straight-down-to-the-sea view that earns the name "azzurro" all on its own. Go at first light. Bring the shot. Take your time. The trail is not going anywhere, and neither, today, are you.
2. the wine-dark cove at corniglia
Corniglia is the middle village, the one perched highest, the one most people skip because there is no direct ferry stop and there are 382 steps from the station. That climb is the price of admission to the least crowded village on the coast and, below it, a rocky cove the locals reach by a barely-marked switchback off Via Serra. The water is cold and startlingly clear. There are maybe six people there on a busy day. This is your swim. You earned it with those steps.
3. the pesto focaccia cart the ferry crowd never finds
In Vernazza, walk away from the harbor square. Away from the striped umbrellas and the laminated menus. Keep going up the caruggi, the narrow lanes that climb into the residential part of the village, until you find the cart (it moves, but it is usually near the top of Via Roma by mid-morning) selling focaccia di Recco slathered with fresh pesto. No sign. Cash only. The woman running it is not interested in your travel blog. Buy two pieces, eat them on the nearest wall overlooking the water, and acknowledge that you have peaked for the day.
4. the aperitivo hour nobody clocks
The ferry crowd rushes the harbor bars at sunset for the Instagram angle. Meanwhile, the tiny enoteca on the back lane in Manarola pours the local Sciacchetrà dessert wine by the glass from around 5pm, with no queue and a terrace facing inland toward the vines instead of the sea. Every village harbor is crowded by 9am. At 7am, the fishing boats are coming back in and the only other people awake are the ones who live there.
